Are Northern Lights Tours Worth It in Levi?
Are Northern Lights tours worth it in Levi? When a guided chase beats watching on your own, what the extra money buys, and when a free spot is enough.
A Northern Lights tour in Levi is worth it when you have no car, few nights or a cloudy forecast over the village, because a guide drives to clearer sky and brings you back. When the sky over Levi is clear and activity is strong, a free spot such as Lake Immeljärvi is enough. Compare every type of aurora tour from Levi before you pay.

Three ways to spend an aurora night
Aurora-first chases exist to find the lights. A guide in a minivan or 4x4 picks you up in the evening and changes the route with the cloud, sometimes driving a long way. Independent viewing costs nothing: you walk to Immeljärvi or drive to a spot on Visit Levi’s aurora map and wait. Experience-first tours, such as snowmobile safaris, campfire evenings, the lake cabin or snowshoe walks, stay in one area; the activity is the attraction, and the night is still good if the lights never appear.
All three depend on the same sky. FMI puts the chance of auroras over Lapland ski resorts such as Levi at roughly 50 percent of dark, cloudless nights, and no tour changes that. A tour improves your odds of standing under a cloudless patch when activity comes.
What the extra money buys
- Mobility to clear sky. Arctic GM’s chase has no mileage or time limit and typically runs 6 to 10 hours, crossing borders if needed. Beyond Arctic says it will drive 100 km (62 miles) for better conditions. A van can leave a cloudy valley; a lake shore cannot.
- Transport at night. Most chases collect you from your accommodation, or from set points in Levi, and return you after midnight. Without one, the darker map spots need a car; Muoniontie 2030 is 22 km (14 miles) out.
- Forecast reading. Guides plan the night from cloud and activity forecasts, which is hard to do well on your first visit.
- Photos. Several tours include DSLR photos of you under the aurora; Beyond Arctic adds a tripod and edited photos.
- Warm gear. Arctic GM supplies thermal overalls. Not every tour does: Lazy Santa’s private 4x4 excludes winter clothing, and the budget minivan lists none.
Operators publish their own success rates, but no independent figure exists for any Levi chase.
When watching on your own is enough
You can skip the tour on a night when all of these hold:
- FMI’s local forecast shows clear sky over Levi itself.
- The Muonio station on FMI’s live aurora service is yellow or red.
- You are staying within walking distance of Immeljärvi or Tuomikuruntie, so no car is needed.
- You have more than one night, so a miss costs nothing.
- You are happy to read the ice and trail rules and to stand still in −10 °C (14 °F) or colder.
Our guide to watching without a tour covers the five official spots and the safety rules.
What each option costs
Prices as the platforms show them, checked October 2026, per person unless stated.
| Option | Type | From | Length | Included | If no aurora |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Immeljärvi on your own | Independent | Free | As long as you like | Nothing | Nothing lost |
| Sledge ride | Experience-first | $100 | About 2 h | Pickup, thermal overalls | No refund |
| Minivan tour | Aurora-first | $111 | About 2.5 h | Pickup from set points | No refund |
| Beyond Arctic photo hunt | Aurora-first | $138 | 5.5–6 h | Minivan, hot drinks, tripod, edited photos | Night photography instead |
| Arctic Midnight small group | Aurora-first | $147 | 2–4 h | Pickup, DSLR photos, campfire, snacks | No refund |
| Snowmobile safari | Experience-first | $160 | About 3 h | Winter clothes, warm juice | No refund |
| Private-lake cabin | Experience-first | $178 | About 3.5 h | Pickup, cabin, snacks, photos | Cancelled with refund if too cloudy |
| Arctic GM chase | Aurora-first | $223 | 6–10 h | Pickup, overalls, DSLR photos, snacks | Full refund if none captured by camera |
| Lazy Santa private 4x4 | Aurora-first, private | $308 | 4–5 h | Private vehicle, pickup, snacks | 30% refund |
For two people, the gap between the Arctic Midnight tour ($294 together) and the Arctic GM chase ($446) buys several more hours of driving and a refund rule. Lazy Santa’s private 4x4 is priced per person on Viator, and a solo booking costs double; on GetYourGuide the same private hunt costs $766 per group of up to six. Two people pay less on Viator ($616), three or more pay less on GetYourGuide.
The featured tour on this page, Arctic Midnight’s Levi Northern Lights Experience, picks you up at your accommodation, moves between locations each night and includes DSLR photos and a campfire. It rates 4.9 from 64 reviews. The drawbacks: at 2 to 4 hours it cannot range as far as an all-night chase, and it offers no refund if the aurora stays away. Read our review.
Refund rules if the sky stays empty
“Guaranteed” on a listing means a refund or rebooking rule, never a promise that the aurora appears. Read the wording on the listing you book:
- Arctic GM (693623) refunds in full “if no Northern Lights are captured by camera at any point during your tour”. It counts “any aurora captured by camera … including faint or stationary auroras that may not be clearly visible to the naked eye”, and refunds if “conditions are extremely unfavorable” and the tour does not start.
- Lazy Santa’s private 4x4 promises a 30% refund on Viator (5526376P1) but a 50% money-back on GetYourGuide (864972). The two listings word it differently.
- Soma Adventures’ lake cabin (675678) cancels with a full refund “if it is too cloudy”.
- Beyond Arctic (469723) switches to night photography if heavy cloud or snowfall hides the aurora; no refund is stated.
- Most others, including the minivan tour, the snowmobile safari and the sledge ride, say the lights cannot be guaranteed and that the operator will not cancel for weather.
Every paged tour above offers free cancellation until 24 hours before the start, so check the forecast before that cut-off.

Frequently asked questions
Should I book a Northern Lights tour?
Book one if you have no car, only one or two nights, or a cloudy forecast over Levi. A guide moves to clearer sky and handles transport. If you have several nights and are staying near Lake Immeljärvi, try a clear night on your own first.
Should you book a Northern Lights tour or go on your own?
Go alone when the forecast is clear over Levi and you can walk to a dark spot. Book a chase when cloud covers the village or the dark spots are out of reach. Many visitors do both: free viewing on clear nights, one tour for the rest.
Do you need a tour to see the Northern Lights?
No. Visit Levi’s aurora map lists five free spots, including Lake Immeljärvi near the centre. You need a clear, dark sky and some activity. A tour helps mainly with transport, forecasting and finding clear sky.
What happens if you don’t see the Northern Lights on a tour?
It depends on the listing. Arctic GM refunds in full if no aurora is captured by camera; Lazy Santa refunds 30% on Viator and 50% on GetYourGuide; Soma cancels with a refund when it is too cloudy. Most other tours give no refund for a missed aurora.
Is it better to book a tour or rent a car in Levi?
A car gets you to the fell top, South Point and Muoniontie 2030, but you drive snowy roads at night and read the cloud yourself. A chase driver goes much further and knows where clear sky is likely. With a car and several nights, a tour is optional.
Are Northern Lights tours a scam?
No, but nobody can promise the aurora. A “guarantee” is always a refund rule, so read what triggers it. Arctic GM, for example, counts faint auroras that only its camera picks up. Judge a tour by its route, inclusions and refund wording.
