Best Time to See the Northern Lights in Levi

Best time to see the Northern Lights in Levi, month by month from August to April: darkness, cloud, snow, temperatures and which tour type suits each period.

Updated October 2026

The best time to see the Northern Lights in Levi is from mid-September to the end of March, when the nights turn fully dark. Once the weather is counted, the Finnish Meteorological Institute points to March and early April, because November and December are the cloudiest months. Book a Levi Northern Lights tour early in your stay so a cloudy night can be retried.

Fact card: FMI rates March and early April above December for clear aurora skies over Levi

The season in brief

Visit Levi puts the aurora season at mid-August to mid-April, with September to March usually best. Darkness, cloud and activity decide each night.

Darkness comes first. Levi’s first fully dark (astronomical) night of autumn falls on about 12 September 2026, and the last of spring on about 31 March 2027. Late August and early April are twilight nights.

Cloud is the main obstacle, since the aurora forms 80 to 500 km above the weather. FMI says clear days are rarest in November and December, and that “considering also the weather, the best time for seeing auroras in Northern Finland is in March and early April.”

Activity varies less than people think: FMI calls the equinox rate only “slightly higher”, in September as much as March. On a dark, cloudless night, FMI puts the chance of auroras at Lapland ski resorts such as Levi at roughly 50 percent. Solar cycle 25 peaked in October 2024 and is declining, but FMI says auroras stay common in Lapland “even during solar minimum”.

Which tours run when

Bookable dates, checked October 2026: chases and the lake-cabin evening start between 26 October and 1 November. Snow activities start later. Easy Travel’s snowmobile safari with a campfire picnic opens on 2 November, the Northern Lights Snowmobile Safari on 16 November and Wild Nordic’s 3-hour snowmobile safari on 1 December. Snowshoe walks follow on 3 and 16 November, telescope stargazing on 10 November, the campfire on 20 November, ice floating on 23 November and the sledge ride on 1 December.

Viator calendars run to 12 April 2027 for Arctic Midnight’s small-group tour, 15 April for Lazy Santa’s private 4x4 and 31 March for Wild Nordic’s snowmobiles. A listing’s first date is the earliest a snowmobile goes out, never a promise of snow.

Late August to October

On 15 August civil twilight lasts until 23:39, so any aurora appears in a pale sky. By mid-September there are about two and a half fully dark hours around midnight, and Visit Levi rates autumn highly for photography because the ground is still dark. We checked listings in October 2026, so confirm late-summer calendars before you plan. From late October the aurora-first tours run: Beyond Arctic’s hunting and photography tour (5.5 to 6 hours, from $138 per person) visits two or three locations chosen on the day, includes edited photos and switches to night-sky photography if cloud or snow hides the sky. Its minimum age is 8 and it rates 4.3 from 174 reviews; read our review.

November to January

The sun stays below the horizon for roughly the second half of December, but polar night is not 24-hour darkness: on 15 December civil twilight lasts from 09:31 to 15:00. Cloud is the problem. A chase that can drive away from it, compared on our chase page, suits an aurora-first traveller. Experience-first evenings such as snowmobile safaris or a cabin or campfire night stay good under cloud. January is the coldest month, and Visit Levi warns of frost “up to minus 30 degrees” in January and February.

February to April

Snow is deep and days lengthen fast, from 7.9 hours of daylight in mid-February to 11.6 hours in mid-March. If you are travelling over the UK’s February half term, check your dates against the full moon on 20–21 February 2027. March combines FMI’s best weather odds, the equinox on 20 March and the full winter programme. After about 16 April the sky stays in twilight all night.

Why not May to July

Levi has midnight sun from about 28 May to 16 July, and by mid-May the sky no longer gets dark at night. FMI says that in summer “the nights are generally too light for seeing the auroras”. Come in summer for the midnight sun, not the aurora.

The best time of night

FMI says the typical time for auroral displays “is at midnight, and a couple of hours before and after”, and gives 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. as the best window. Solar midnight at Levi falls around 00:15 in winter, so the peak sits just after midnight on the clock, and many tours return you after midnight.

NOAA notes that a full moon dims the apparent brightness of the aurora, though not its actual brightness.

How many nights to allow

FMI’s 50 percent applies only to dark, cloudless nights, so each extra night adds a chance at clear sky. Book your aurora evening for the first night or two. Some operators move or refund a cloudy night: Soma Adventures cancels with a full refund if it is too cloudy, and Safartica’s campfire can be moved to the next suitable day if you ask by 16:00.

Frequently asked questions

When can you see the Northern Lights in Levi?

From about late August to mid-April, after dark and under a clear sky. Fully dark nights run from about 12 September to 31 March. FMI says the most likely time is around midnight, give or take a couple of hours.

Can you see the Northern Lights in Levi in December?

Yes. December has the longest nights, and the sun does not rise from about 12 to 31 December. The catch is cloud: FMI says November and December have the fewest clear days, so a tour that drives to clearer sky helps.

Which month is best to see Northern Lights in Lapland?

FMI says that, once weather is counted, March and early April are best in northern Finland. Nights are still dark, clear days are more frequent than in early winter, and activity is slightly higher around the equinox. September is a good autumn alternative.

What are the chances of seeing Northern Lights in Levi?

FMI puts the chance at roughly 50 percent of nights in Lapland ski resorts such as Levi, but only on dark, cloudless nights. Cloud lowers the real figure, so give yourself several evenings and book any tour early in the trip.

Is there snow in Levi in November?

Usually. FMI’s maps put Levi’s first snow in mid-October and lasting snow cover from about late October to early November. Snowmobile safaris open on 2 and 16 November this season, snow permitting.

What is polar night in Levi?

The period when the sun stays below the horizon all day, about 12 to 31 December at Levi. It is not 24-hour darkness: on 15 December civil twilight lasts from 09:31 to 15:00.
