How the Snowmobile Safari Runs

Transport from set points in Levi, a late start, two riders per machine.

  1. Pick a date from 16 November

The first bookable date this season is 16 November 2026 (checked October 2026), because the safari needs snow. Pack the original driving license of whoever will drive; the listing asks you to bring it.

  2. Get collected in Levi

Transport runs from set locations in Levi, and the operator notes the late timing of the trip. Check your pickup point and time on the booking confirmation.

  3. Suit up and pair up

Winter clothes and snowmobile accessories are supplied. Two people share one snowmobile, and children ride on a sledge under warm blankets. The trip is not for pregnant travelers.

  4. Ride, stop, look up

You ride forest trails by headlight and moonlight, then stop for warm juice and photos. The lights cannot be guaranteed, and the operator does not cancel for weather.

Shared, Single or Sledge

Snowmobile safaris

Drive, Share or Ride the Sledge

What a night snowmobile safari really is, the license and age rules, damage excess by operator, children, pregnancy, cold and start dates.

A snowmobile Northern Lights tour from Levi is a three-hour night ride on forest trails, with stops to look up. You drive a machine you share with another adult, pay extra to ride alone, or sit in a sledge towed by the guide. The most-reviewed snowmobile listing is Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park’s Northern Lights Snowmobile Safari: 4.5 from 629 reviews, from $160 per person, first date 16 November (checked October 2026).

An experience-first night

Every snowmobile safari here is experience-first. While you ride, the engine is loud and your own headlight lights up the snow in front of you, so you look for the aurora at the stops. The route follows the operator’s trails (Visit Levi counts almost 900 km, or 560 miles, of snowmobile routes around Levi) and does not move to wherever the cloud breaks. The window is about three hours. On a cloudy night you still get the ride; several Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park reviewers saw no lights and enjoyed it anyway. Wild Nordic’s listing says: “Snowmobiling after dark is an experience in itself even if the auroras do not show up for us.” If a sighting matters more than the ride, book a Northern Lights chase, whose route changes with the cloud.

License and age: the law and the operator’s rule

Traficom says “You may drive a snowmobile if you are aged 15 or over”, and you need a category T license to drive on official snowmobile routes and to cross roads. A car (B) license includes T, says Liikenneturva, the Finnish road safety council. Operators set their own minimum, usually higher: Wild Nordic asks for a driver “at least 18 years old” with a valid physical B license. Easy Travel wants “a car or motorcycle driving license”, and Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park’s terms ask for “a valid driver’s license”. Tokka Safaris’ own booking terms accept drivers from 15 with at least a T license, but its GetYourGuide safari (4.8 from 47 reviews, from $162) states 18 with a B license, so ask first.

Bring the original card. Wild Nordic says that “according to Finnish traffic regulations, copies, photographs or digital licenses cannot be accepted”, and a driver who forgets it rides as a passenger with no refund. Easy Travel requires zero blood alcohol for drivers, and Wild Nordic has zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs.

Damage excess, operator by operator

The driver is liable for damage to the machine. The amounts below come from each operator’s own terms:

  • Wild Nordic: a flat €900 per driver per accident, cut to €200 by a €20 waiver on one-to-four-hour safaris.
  • Tokka Safaris: €1,500, cut to €350 by a €35 release bought before the safari.
  • Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park: its own terms state no amount. A reseller listing quotes €950 and a €15 on-site cover, so confirm both before you ride.
  • Easy Travel: not published.

Lapland Safaris (€980) and Safartica (€990) publish similar figures. Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park’s listing excludes travel insurance, so check your own policy.

Two to a machine, solo riders and children

Two adults usually share one snowmobile; Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park’s listing says “two people share one snowmobile on this tour”. Easy Travel makes uneven groups book a single snowmobile: $263 per person against $207 on a shared machine on 2 November (checked October 2026). Wild Nordic’s GetYourGuide version, Snowmobile Tour with Snacks and Drinks, sells a single-rider option and warns that solo travelers may share with another party.

Children ride in a sled pulled by the guide, but the age bands differ. Wild Nordic seats children aged 4–14 in the sledge, wants an adult beside anyone 7 or under, and does not recommend safaris under 4. Easy Travel puts under-15s in the sled unless they are 140 cm (4 ft 7 in) or taller and pay the adult price. A reseller gives “under 13” for Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park, whose own listing calls the trip best suited to adults. By law the towing machine is capped at 40 km/h (25 mph). Every self-drive safari in the table excludes pregnant travelers; Wild Nordic cites “vibrations as a result of uneven tracks, and the presence of exhaust fumes”. Wild Nordic and Tokka also exclude spinal or back problems.

Speed makes it colder

Speed adds wind to the frost. Visit Levi’s limits run up to 60 km/h (37 mph) on terrain routes, and Visit Levi says the Arctic wind makes temperatures of “up to minus 30 degrees feel even colder”. One reviewer of the Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park safari asked for better protection for “passenger’s feet and hands and driver’s face”. Operators lend overalls, boots, gloves and helmets, and Wild Nordic’s list adds a balaclava and woolen socks. Wear merino and fleece underneath, as Visit Levi advises. Passengers sit still and feel the cold first.

When the season starts

Safaris need snow, and the start dates show it: Easy Travel from 2 November, Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park from 16 November, and Wild Nordic, Tokka and the sledge ride from 1 December (checked October 2026). FMI’s maps put the start of permanent snow cover around Levi at roughly late October to early November, and Wild Nordic keeps the right to change route and duration for snow conditions. Never plan a ride before a listing’s first date. Newer options include Lovimainas’ Off-Grid Aurora Snowmobile Expedition on a private 140-hectare area (from $167, no reviews yet) and Keo Wilderness’ two-hour Twilight Snowmobile Safari (4.7 from 19 reviews, from $151).

Which one to book

None of the listings we track is a private snowmobile safari; for a night with only your group, see private Northern Lights tours. To pick a month, read the best time guide, or compare every type of aurora tour from Levi.
