How the Guaranteed-Sightings Chase Runs
Pickup in Levi, a route set by the cloud forecast, and a night that usually runs 6–10 hours.
Book for at least two
The tour needs a minimum of 2 participants. If it is not met, Arctic GM reschedules or cancels, and you can take a full refund or another date. Free cancellation runs to 24 hours before.
Pickup from your accommodation
The guide collects you from your accommodation in Levi in a 2025 Ford Tourneo 4x4 van. Thermal overalls are supplied; bring a passport or ID card, warm clothing and warm shoes. Luggage and large bags are not allowed.
Drive to where the sky is clear
There is no mileage or time limit, and the route can cross borders. The listing puts a typical night at 6–10 hours, with hot drinks and light snacks on the way and DSLR photos taken by the guide.
Know the refund rule
If no aurora is captured by camera at any point, you get a full refund. A faint aurora seen only on camera counts as a sighting. If conditions are extremely unfavorable, the tour does not start and is refunded.

How an Aurora Chase From Levi Works
Distance and time limits, minivan or 4x4, what each refund rule pays out on, and who each chase suits.
An aurora hunting tour from Levi is a guided drive in search of clear sky, so the route changes with the cloud forecast every night. That makes a chase the most direct choice if seeing the lights matters most. Chases run from a 2.5-hour minivan loop at $111 to Arctic GM’s guaranteed-sightings chase at $223, which typically lasts 6–10 hours (prices checked October 2026).

Every tour here is aurora-first: it exists to find the lights, and the night has little else to offer if the sky stays shut. If you want an evening that works without a sighting, snowmobiles, campfires and cabins are on our snowmobile page and the homepage, where you can compare every type of aurora tour from Levi.
How a chase works
The aurora forms 80–500 km (50–310 miles) above the ground, far above any weather, so cloud is what stops you seeing it. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) puts the odds of auroras in the Levi area at roughly half of dark, cloudless nights. A chase exists to put you under the cloudless part of the map. Guides read the cloud and aurora forecasts during the day; Beyond Arctic says its planning starts early in the morning. Then the van drives, stops, everyone steps out and looks north, and the group moves on if cloud closes in.
Most of the night is driving and waiting. FMI says displays typically peak around midnight, a couple of hours either side, which is why the longer chases stay out past it. Visit Levi adds that fell tops such as Levi or Kätkä can sit above low cloud, so a short tour may simply climb instead of driving far. The FMI aurora pages explain the odds; the months that clear most often are in our best-time guide.
Distance, time and what “unlimited mileage” means
Every chase has a limit, and it is either time or distance. The short tours cap the time. The Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park Northern Lights Tour by Minivan lasts about 2.5 hours, the operator will not cancel for weather, and the listing gives no group size (our review). Northern Lights Safaris’ minivan with hot drinks and snacks drives around Levi for up to 3 hours, takes up to 8 people and picks up within 10 km (6 miles) of Levi; it is rated 4.8 from 25 reviews and starts 4 November. Polar work service’s Northern Lights Hunt with Hot Drink is a 2-hour drive to two or three spots, including the top of Levi Fell, leaving from Levi Zero Point at Hissitie 8 with a driver; it holds 3.6 from only 6 reviews.
The mid-length chases flex the distance. Beyond Arctic’s hunting and photography tour says it will drive 100 km (62 miles) if that is where the sky is clear.
“Unlimited” means unlimited within one night, with the operator deciding where to go. Arctic GM travels “without mileage or time limits, crossing borders if needed”, and one traveller’s review describes about 11 hours in the van and a drive to Sweden. BookLapland’s Northern Lights Pro Guaranteed ($301, about 8 hours, 5.0 from 6 reviews) says a night might mean 50 km or 400 km (31 or 249 miles) into Sweden or Norway, and picks up within 50 km of Levi. Light Hunters Lapland’s Ylläs and Levi guaranteed hunt ($178, 4.8 from 24 reviews) has no time limit and averages 5–7 hours. Lazy Santa’s private 4x4 is the hybrid: no kilometre limit, but a maximum of 5 hours from pickup to drop-off. In practice, an unlimited chase means long stretches sitting in a warm vehicle and a return in the small hours, so plan a lazy next morning.
Minivan or 4x4
The vehicle matters less than the time limit, group size and refund rule. Arctic GM runs 2025 Ford Tourneo 4x4 vans, and Lazy Santa’s GetYourGuide listing describes a 4x4 Arctic truck that reaches viewing spots “even in difficult, snowy conditions”. Beyond Arctic, both short minivan tours and Kelo Rental’s hunt travel by minivan. Four-wheel drive helps a guide reach a spot in deep snow; it does nothing about the cloud, so a minivan chase with a long time limit can outrun weather that a short 4x4 trip cannot.
What each “guarantee” pays out on
A guarantee is a refund rule, never a promise that the lights appear, and each operator words its trigger differently:
- Arctic GM (693623): a full refund “if no Northern Lights are captured by camera at any point during your tour”. Faint or stationary auroras that show only on camera count, and a tour that does not start because conditions are “extremely unfavorable” is refunded.
- Light Hunters Lapland (1162640): “Money back if not seen the lights.”
- BookLapland (1078939): “100% money-back guarantee if no lights are seen”, and it runs only “when aurora chances are realistic”.
- Kelo Rental & Safaris’ Money Back Guarantee hunt ($130, 4 hours, up to 10 guests per guide, 5.0 from 2 reviews): money back if you “don’t see the Northern Lights or aren’t able to get photos of them”.
- Lazy Santa: a 30% refund on Viator, but “50% money-back if no sighting” on GetYourGuide. Check the listing you book.
- Experience Kittilä’s small-group hunt with pro photos ($100, 3 hours, max 8): a reschedule or full refund only if it cancels “due to severe weather”.
The Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park minivan and Arctic Midnight both say the lights cannot be guaranteed. Many of the higher refund promises sit on listings with few reviews, so weigh them against the review count.
Minimum numbers, late nights and who each chase suits
Arctic GM needs two participants; below that it reschedules or cancels with a refund. Its drawback is the night itself: 6–10 hours is long for children or anyone with an early flight, and a camera-only aurora counts as success. Read our review before you book.
Beyond Arctic suits people who want photos and a proper chase without the all-night commitment. It takes no one under 8, holds 4.3 from 174 reviews, and one reviewer found the van full and cramped. Our photography tours page compares it with the photo-led alternatives.
The short minivan suits a first look on a budget, with no guarantee and no weather cancellations. Arctic Midnight’s Levi Northern Lights Experience (4.9 from 64 reviews) adds DSLR photos and a campfire in 2–4 hours, though the listing never gives its group size. Couples and families who want to set the pace should look at private tours, where the per-group arithmetic is worked out. If you are unsure a tour is needed at all, read seeing the lights without a tour and when a guided tour pays off.

We were driving for very long, and we went all the way to almost cross to Sweden!"

"We saw the Northern Lights – what more could you want! The guys deliver on their promises and look after their guests the whole time. Our tour guide, Agnes (Mathilde), did her best to show us the aurora and drove all the way to Sweden! In total, we spent about 11 hours travelling in the comfortable car and don't regret it! Thank you!"
"It was an incredible night. We were picked up from the hotel right on time, and our tour guide, Agnes (Mathilde), was very attentive. She looked after us the whole night and said we wouldn't finish the tour until we wanted to go home. Later, she even drove us up a hill to see the lights from another spot. We were very lucky; the aurora borealis were very strong, so it was a truly successful excursion and highly recommended."
"Amazing commitment to take us to the best spots to see the lights. We went all the way to Sweden to catch clear skies, and we were lucky to get a full spectacle."

Aurora Hunting in Levi: Questions
How a chase works, how far it drives, cloudy nights, minivan or 4x4, group sizes, times and photos.
Aurora hunting is a guided drive that goes looking for a clear patch of sky, because cloud, not the aurora, is what usually stops you seeing the lights. The guide reads the cloud and aurora forecasts, picks a direction and moves on if cloud rolls in. FMI puts the odds of auroras in the Levi area at roughly half of dark, cloudless nights. When the sky clears most.
You are collected in the evening, usually from your accommodation or a set point in Levi, and driven to a first viewing spot chosen from the day's forecasts. The group steps out, looks north, warms up with a hot drink and either stays or drives on. Short tours visit two or three spots in 2–3 hours; long chases such as Arctic GM's keep moving for 6–10 hours. Expect more time in the vehicle than outside.
It depends on the limit each tour sets. The Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park minivan lasts about 2.5 hours, and Northern Lights Safaris drives around Levi for up to 3 hours. Beyond Arctic will go 100 km (62 miles) if the sky is clear there. Arctic GM and BookLapland set no mileage limit and may cross into Sweden or Norway; BookLapland mentions drives of up to 400 km (249 miles).
Most do. The Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park minivan states that the operator will not cancel for weather, so check the forecast and change your date more than 24 hours ahead if needed. Beyond Arctic switches to night photography if heavy cloud or snow hides the aurora. Arctic GM does not start the tour when conditions are extremely unfavorable, and refunds you in full. Read each listing's own wording.
Neither by itself. A 4x4 helps reach spots in deep snow; it cannot remove cloud. What decides your chances is how long and how far the tour is allowed to go. Arctic GM uses 4x4 vans with no mileage or time limit, while Beyond Arctic's minivan can still drive 100 km. A short 2.5-hour tour, in any vehicle, has fewer options on a cloudy night. Photo-led minivan hunts.
Several listings cap the group at 8: Arctic GM (max 8 guests), Beyond Arctic (max 8 per guide), Northern Lights Safaris (up to 8 per tour), BookLapland and Experience Kittilä. Kelo Rental allows up to 10 guests per guide. The Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park minivan and Arctic Midnight's small-group tour do not state a number on their listings, so ask before booking if group size matters to you.
The listings show start times only when you check availability, and they vary through the season. What you can plan around is length: 2–4 hours for the short minivan tours and Arctic Midnight, 5.5–6 hours for Beyond Arctic, and typically 6–10 hours for Arctic GM. FMI says displays peak around midnight, so long chases return in the small hours. Avoid booking one before an early flight.
On many, yes. Arctic GM's guide is also a professional aurora photographer and DSLR photos are included. Beyond Arctic sends edited photos after the tour, and Arctic Midnight includes professional DSLR photos. The Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park minivan lists no photos. Tours built around a photographer, and how many pictures you get, are compared on our photography tours page.
Beyond Arctic's GetYourGuide hunt (5.5–6 hours, from $138) includes a wilderness and photography guide, minivan transport, pickup, hot drinks, headlamps, a tripod for your camera or a phone mount, and a collection of edited photos after the tour. Groups are up to 8 per guide and the minimum age is 8. It is rated 4.3 from 174 reviews. Our review.
For your chances on a cloudy night, usually yes, because a long chase can drive away from the cloud and stay out past midnight. The cost is money and sleep: Arctic GM's chase is $223 and typically 6–10 hours, against $111 and 2.5 hours for the short minivan. If you have several clear-looking nights, a short tour may do. With one night and a poor forecast, the long chase gives you more options.
