Levi: Evening Snowshoe Walk Under Northern Sky

4.4 (10 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Polar Star Travel’s evening snowshoe walk is a short, experience-first night out. A van takes the group a short distance from Levi village to a natural area with no artificial lights, and a local guide leads the walk on snowshoes along quiet forest trails. The aurora is something to watch for along the way, not the reason the tour runs: the operator says sightings can never be guaranteed and that the evening is meant to be a good nature experience either way.

Once everyone has their snowshoes on, the walk heads into the forest after dark. The guide stops along the route to talk about Lappish nature, culture and folklore. Reviewers mention head torches handed out at the start, quick instructions on using the snowshoes, and a mix of packed trails and a short stretch of deep snow. The halfway point is a traditional wooden hut, where you warm up with a hot drink and a light snack while keeping an eye on the sky. Guests describe sausages and hot berry juice by the fire, and one walked out onto a frozen lake to watch the Northern Lights before warming up.

At about 2.5 hours, this is the shortest of the snowshoe evenings we review, which makes it easy to fit after a day of skiing. It is also more open to families than most: only children under 7 are excluded, and one family with 10-year-old children said the pace suited them. Guides work in Finnish and English. Clothing is not listed as included, so bring your own warm winter layers, boots, hat and mittens.

The weather rule is worth knowing before you book. Polar Star Travel may adjust the route, duration or schedule because of conditions such as extreme cold. If you do not want to accept a change, the listing says you can request a full refund. Otherwise, you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before.

The drawbacks show up in the reviews. One guest found the trails already well trodden for much of the way, and a family of six felt the total was too expensive for what they got. The rating of 4.4 also rests on only 10 reviews. At $139 per person (checked October 2026), it costs less than the longer, adults-only snowshoe walk, but it includes less: no thermal suit, no hot meal and no photos. If you want those, read our review of Wandering Owl’s Night Star Walk; for a family evening by a fire without the walk, the unique Northern Lights experiences page compares the alternatives.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.4/5 by 10 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

It was a fantastic evening! (16.02.2026) Andrew and his colleague took excellent care of us. We met at the Travel Center and all participants were taken to the starting point in two small busses. By then, it was already dark. Everyone recieved what they needed: a headlamp, a witty saying, and instructions on how to put on and use the snowshoes. We made our way through the forest. The tour wasn’t too hard so that everyone can make it. Our 10 years old children could also took part on it, that was important for us. Here and there, we stopped and Andrew told us some interesting information about the nature and this region of Finland in his funny art. After a while, we arrived to a “kota” (traditional finnish hut) where we had time for photos, conversation and delicious sausage with berry juice. The return journey was more direct, following a straight line back to the cars. At that time this was quite welcome for the most. It was a well-balanced tour, we would recommend to try it.

Great activity, we were able to walk on a frozen lake and admire the Northern Lights, then warm up by the fire with sausages and hot juice

It was a lot of fun; the guides were very nice and also shared a lot of interesting information. It was a pity that most of the way we walked on trails that had already been used by snowshoes. As a result, the trail was already somewhat well-trodden. However, shortly before the refreshment stop, we were also able to try our hand at walking in deep snow. The food was good, and the snowshoes and poles were new. All in all, a great experience.
