Levi: Northern Lights in Peace and Privacy - by a Private Lake

About This Experience

This is an experience-first evening. Soma Adventures, a small family business, drives a group of up to eight from Levi to the family’s rustic cabin beside a private lake, about 40 km (25 miles) north of the village. The night is built around that place: a frozen lake to stand or lie on, a fireplace inside, and dark skies well away from Levi’s lights. Auroras are possible on any clear night, but the tour is still a good evening if they stay away.

Pickup is around 9 pm from your holiday home or hotel in the Levi area. The drive takes about 40 minutes, with stops whenever the guides spot something on the way. At the lake you can walk around freely, take photos, or lie on reindeer hides on the ice and watch the sky. When the cold gets through, you move into the cabin to warm up by the fire with homemade pies or cakes, sausages, freshly made marshmallows and hot berry juice or tea, while the guides talk about aurora facts, old myths and life in this corner of Lapland. Guests’ reviews also mention a short sled pull across the lake and the hosts’ outdoor toilet with its own small gallery.

The guide photographs the group and delivers the pictures on the night, so you do not need a good camera. The operator is open about one thing many visitors only learn later: the aurora usually looks brighter in pictures than to the naked eye.

The weather rule is the reason many people pick this tour. On the morning of the tour, the operator tells you how the chances look and what time it will collect you. If it is too cloudy, it cancels and you get a full refund, and it says it will drive elsewhere, for example west, if the lights are showing better away from the lake. That makes it a cabin evening with some flexibility, though it is not a chase: one guest noted that on a cloudy night the group has few other spots to try. You will be back around 00:30–1 am. The booking page says 3.5 hours, and the listing’s own notes say about 4 hours in total.

The drawbacks are the late finish, the minimum age of 13 with no child price, and the price of $178 per person (checked October 2026) for a fixed-location evening. If you mainly want the best chance of a sighting, an aurora-first chase such as the long minivan hunts covers more ground. If you want a warm, small-group night with a fire and a lake to yourselves, this is the closest thing to visiting a local family’s cabin. For a shorter evening with a telescope and a fire, see our review of the Keo Wilderness stargazing tour.

Simply fantastic! Thank you so much for this amazing evening under the beautiful Northern Lights!

We were lucky enough to catch a perfect night for the Northern Lights! The pick-up was perfectly timed, and at the lake, we could move around freely, take photos, or just watch the sky. If you didn’t have a good camera, our guide simply took excellent photos that were sent to you right away! We could warm up in the kota, and at the end, there was even a short sleigh ride across the lake. All in all, a fantastic experience—simply magical, and great people. I would gladly come back. ✨

We can’t thank Heli and Pikka enough for our experience last night! Conditions were favorable after several days of bad weather, so Pikka and Heli made sure we stopped several times to and from Heli’s cabin. If you’re looking for an authentic and personable experience while in Lapland, this is the one!!! Not only will Heli and Pikka maximize aurora viewing whenever possible, but they also served us delicious hot berry juice, cake, sausages, and marshmallows, and Heli gave us a “sleigh ride” on the lake! We wish we could do it all over again :)

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if it is cloudy on the night of the lake cabin tour?

The operator checks the forecast and tells you on the morning of the tour what the chances look like and when it will pick you up. If it is too cloudy, it cancels the tour and refunds you in full. You can also cancel yourself up to 24 hours before for a full refund.

How far from Levi is the private lake?

The listing puts the family cabin about 40 km (25 miles) north of Levi, roughly 40 minutes by car, away from the village lights. The guides drive you there from your accommodation and stop on the way if they spot anything interesting.

What time does the tour start and finish?

Pickup is around 9 pm from your accommodation in the Levi area, at a time confirmed on the morning of the tour. The listing expects you back around 00:30–1 am. The booking page shows 3.5 hours, while the operator’s notes say the tour lasts about 4 hours in total.

Can children join the Northern Lights by a private lake tour?

The GetYourGuide listing says the tour is not suitable for children under 13, and there is no separate children’s price, so every guest pays the adult rate. Families with younger children should look at other evening tours with lower age limits.

Is food included on the lake cabin evening?

Yes. The listing includes homemade snacks by the campfire: pies or cakes baked by the owner, sausages and freshly made marshmallows, with hot berry juice or tea. If you have a dietary need, tell the operator when you book.

Do I get photos of the Northern Lights on this tour?

Yes. The guide takes photos of you and the sky and delivers them right away, so you do not need your own camera. The operator notes that auroras often look brighter in photos than to the naked eye, so expect softer colors in person.
