Where to Stay

Where to Stay for Levi's Auroras

Village, glass igloo or dark cabin, compared.

  • 12–15 Min Village to Kittilä Airport
  • 15–20 Min Village to the Igloos
  • 25 Oct 2026 Prices & Fees Checked

Stay in Levi village if you plan to book an aurora tour: almost every Levi tour collects guests from their accommodation in the village or from set points there, and the lifts, restaurants and tourist information are on foot. Book a glass igloo, such as Golden Crown - Levin Iglut on Utsuvaara fell 15 minutes out, if you want to watch the northern sky from bed and accept that cloud still decides. For the darkest skies at the door, the remote cabins 15 to 20 minutes north of Levi, Northern Lights Village Levi among them, sit far from the village lights, but plan on a car, because several tour pickups stop at the village edge. Kittilä town, 7 minutes from the airport and about 20 minutes south of Levi, suits a late arrival or an early flight. A room with a dark northern view helps only on clear nights, and a tour’s value is that it moves to where the sky is clear.

Arctic GM, Arctic Midnight Group and Lazy Santa Safaris collect from your accommodation; Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park collects from set locations in Levi; Keo Wilderness picks up only within 5 km of Levi; Safartica meets at its office in the village and picks up within a 10 km radius; and Wild Nordic meets at the car park outside the Levi Tourist Information.

Levi village: walk to everything

The village is where the tours start. Arctic GM’s Guaranteed-Sightings chase picks up from your accommodation in Levi, Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park’s minivan tour from set locations in the village, and Keo Wilderness’s telescope evening names Break Sokos, Hullu Poro, Design Hotel Levi and Hotel Levi Panorama among its stops. The trade-off is light. Visit Levi’s own advice is that you “must be far from any excess lights” to see the aurora, and the village has street lighting and lit slopes. A strong display still shows from the edge of the village; the faint ones are what you lose.

Two dark spots close to the village

Lake Immeljärvi, about 1.4 km from the village center, is on Visit Levi’s aurora map. It is private property with no parking, and Visit Levi says to walk on the ice only after the winter trails are officially opened, keeping clear of the river mouth at the north end and the ice hole in front of the Saunabaari. The top of Levi Fell, at the end of Tunturitie, has free parking. Our guide to the northern lights without a tour covers all five spots.

Hotels in the village

Lapland Hotels Sirkantähti (mid-range) is on Levintie in the center, with rooms that have their own sauna and free parking outside the rooms, with car heaters at no charge. Break Sokos Hotel Levi (mid-range), on Tähtitie, has a heated indoor garage at €20 a day and showed $476 for a standard twin with breakfast on our February night. Hotel Hullu Poro (mid-range), on Rakkavaarantie, has many rooms with a private sauna, a hot tub and free parking; on 21–22 February only a two-bedroom apartment was left for two, at $543. Design Hotel Levi (upper) is beside Spa Water World with ski-to-door access, a $767 deluxe room that night, and a minimum check-in age of 18. See all stays in Levi.

On the fell: Hotel Levi Panorama

Hotel Levi Panorama (upper) sits on Tunturitie, the road up Levi Fell, 1.6 km by road below the fell-top car park that Visit Levi lists as a viewing spot. It is about 800 m from the village center in a straight line but 4.4 km by road. The listing names ski-to-door access and a sauna on the 7th floor with views over the fells.

Glass igloos: the sky from your bed

Golden Crown - Levin Iglut (luxury) has 27 heated glass igloos on Utsuvaara fell at 340 m, east-southeast of Levi. Its own site says “only 10 km from Levi village”; our drive from the tourist information was 8.8 km, about 15 minutes. Reindeer Manor Levi (luxury), on Isotaalontie south-east of the village, has Glass Roof Huts, each with a private jacuzzi, 12.8 km and about 20 minutes away; it showed $993 for two with breakfast on 21–22 February.

The catch is that glass changes where you watch from, not what the sky does. FMI’s figure of auroras on roughly half of dark nights in Lapland resorts such as Levi applies to cloudless nights only, and under cloud a glass roof shows you cloud. Visit Levi suggests the top of Levi or Kätkä fell when cloud hangs low by the tree line; a car or a tour gets you there, a bed does not.

Tour pickup from the igloos

Lapland Safaris lists Golden Crown Igloos among its Levi pickup points, but pickup radii differ: Keo Wilderness stops at 5 km from Levi and Safartica at 10 km. Confirm with the operator before you book the tour. See all stays around Levi.

Remote aurora cabins: darkest skies, bring a car

Northern Lights Village Levi (upper) has glass-roofed Aurora Cabins 16 km north-west of Levi center on the Muonio road; the resort says its glass roof “opens directly to the northern sky above”. Booking.com’s lowest rate for two on 21–22 February was $682, with breakfast and dinner. The resort runs a shuttle into Levi at €6 per person and private transfers at €50 each way for up to eight, and is open 1 October to 21 April. Kittilä Airport is about 30 minutes away. Northern Lights Ranch (luxury) is due north at Köngäs, about 20 minutes by road, with heated glass ceilings and motorized beds; it showed $711 with breakfast. Arctic Aurora Adventures & Resort (budget) is a lakeside inn by Rautusjärvi, north-east of Levi, with shared bathrooms, a shared kitchen, a sauna and a hot tub; it showed $190 for two, breakfast $11 extra.

Out here the village glow is behind you, but so are the restaurants and most of the tours. The cabins are 15 to 18 km from the village by road, outside the 5 km and 10 km radii above, and the featured chase picks up “from your accommodation in Levi”. Northern Lights Village and the Ranch both sell their own aurora trips, which solves the pickup if you book through them. See all stays around Köngäs.

Kittilä town: the airport side

Kittilä Airport is 15 km south of Levi and about 5 km north of Kittilä town, on the same road, so the town lies beyond the airport from Levi. From Kittilä town it is about 7 minutes to the terminal and about 20 minutes (18.4 km) to Levi. Hotel Kittilä (mid-range), on Valtatie, scored 8.1 from 125 Booking.com reviews and showed $258 for a standard twin on 21–22 February, with continental breakfast and one parking spot; the listing mentions sauna access. See all stays in Kittilä.

Sleep here only for a very early flight or a self-drive trip. No tour on this site lists pickup in Kittilä town, and a village hotel in Levi is only 12 to 15 minutes from the airport, served by the Tunturilinjat airport bus for every scheduled flight at €15 an adult. On your arrival night, book a short tour or none: Arctic GM’s chase typically runs 6 to 10 hours.

Should you split the stay?

A split works when you want both a tour base and a night under glass. Keep the tour nights in the village, where pickup is simple, and add one or two nights in an igloo or a remote cabin in the middle of the trip, so a cloudy glass night leaves village nights on either side for a chase. Finish in the village: it is 12 to 15 minutes from the airport, while Northern Lights Village is about 30. With three nights or fewer, pick one base. Moving costs an afternoon, and most of these properties check in from 4 p.m., as darkness is already falling in midwinter.

All four areas on one map

The map opens on Levi: Northern Lights Village and Köngäs lie to the north, the igloos to the east and south-east, and the airport and Kittilä town to the south.

Booking tips

Book the tour first, then the room. The featured chase and most Levi tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, while several of the room rates we read were non-refundable. Before you pay for either, check that your address sits inside the tour’s pickup wording: “in Levi”, “set locations in Levi”, within 5 km or within 10 km. Book February early: when we checked on 25 October 2026, Northern Lights Village Levi, Hotel Hullu Poro and Hotel Levi Panorama already had no rooms for two on 9–10 February 2027.

In the village you do not need a car. Outside it you do, unless your cabin’s own transfers and trips fit your plans. Visit Levi warns that Google Maps can route you onto snowmobile and ski trails where walking is not allowed.
